A week is too much to ask? Someone on this boat couldn't go a single week without making trouble again. Well, I hope you enjoyed yourself.

Of course not. They were in the military; they knew better. Insubordination was hardly tolerated under my command.

And they were there initially because they chose to be, yeah? There's certain things expected from them at the start.

We've got to make believers of people that sometimes don't understand what's going on, don't want our help, and violently oppose us. We're lucky if we get any chance to bond with our Inmates -- we can only get either as far as we're allowed to go or as far as we can make ourselves push them. Some Wardens come here, I'll admit, and they have no idea what they're up against, how much they're going to be resisted.

Not everybody joins the military out of choice. Ultimately, it is voluntary, but... there are circumstances that could drive a man to enlist, because he has little else.

Besides, it was still a struggle for me, to determine how to best keep morale going in a hopeless situation.

Of course, and I'm not saying it was a stroll in the park for you. But knowing what you know, I would imagine you'd be a little more understanding, considering what we've got to work with.

Morgan, the reason why I'm not a little more understanding is because I earned the right to command my men. I had undergone years of training, and I devoted my life to the army.

We each vowed to save at least one soul. Sometimes against everything we were brought up to believe about right and wrong, how things are to be judged in the end. Sometimes on pain of repeated death, or the loss of our own souls.

It's idealistic. It doesn't come with the commendation of a nation or any real rank.

But do you seriously think there's a single Warden on this boat that is going to be able to live with themselves, much less go unjudged at the end, if they go home and haven't accomplished what they set out to do?

I do, and I think it should. A lot of us come here because we want something. It's kind of selfish. The least we can do is do right by people that need us.

The sentiment is kind, but many of us do not need you Wardens.

You all need somebody. It's our jobs to find out just who that is, and either do our best to be that or find somebody else who can.

It has an effect on certain rights, finances, insurance-- a load of things that probably don't matter in your time. It's... a human rights issue.

I couldn't even adopt a child, if I'd wanted to.

...I think you'd make a good father someday. Maybe a little severe, but given to moments of doting when no one is watching.

I might have wanted a child, at one time.
