To everyone that's come in to port: Inmates Pair of with your Wardens for now, try to stay in groups of four or more, and explore. We're convening in the main common area on deck one in an hour. Do not leave the compound, and if you see anything suspicious, make note of it but don't touch or disturb anything. Bring your findings to the meeting in an hour and we'll sort things there.

Sound off here if you came down.

[An hour later, as directed Morgan is waiting with West and a few others that straggled in early. They didn't see much -- burns in the floors that melted all the way through, but the place is dead.]

[West walks closer to Morgan]

Luckily, you're paired with somebody a bit more modern.

[He means it teasingly. And with that, he flips the 'on' switch]

[identity profile] major-west.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Mm.

[He does the same for his own, then looks around, wondering where the others are] This is completely irresponsible. Half of these people have never even seen a gun before. They're civilians. [A hmph] The Admiral's trying to get us all killed.

[Tony wasn't entirely sure what to do. He managed to get the tracking device on. That was easy enough, though he was a little nervous about the gun. It probably had some kind of safety, but Tony didn't know how that would work. Well...he'd figure it out when he got to it. He then noticed West, who seemed to know what he was doing, and decided to indicate to Ralphie to follow him before approaching the other two.]

Hey.

[Beyond that, he didn't know what else to say. He didn't want to admit that he had no clue what he was doing, but he also didn't know how to fire the gun. Well, how hard could it be?]

[Ralph lets out an over-dramatic sigh as Tony beckons him over. Apparently he doesn't appreciate the arrangement]

Ladies.

[Stopping by the other three, he too leans over the hole in the ground. An eyebrow quirks, and predictably, he hocks loudly, before spitting down into the unknown]

[identity profile] major-west.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh good. More people. Of course, it had to be Tony and Ralph, who he assumes are probably some of the... less useful members of this expedition. He nods at Tony, then bristles at Ralph's 'greeting']

Excuse me? [Then, a sigh as the other man spits down the hole] How charming.

[He crouches down, examining the edges of the hole]

Hm. It's corroded.

[His inmate for the evening didn't seem terribly happy with his desire to follow West, but it wasn't until he greeted them as 'ladies' that Tony spoke. As he did so, he gave Ralph a look like he was a complete and total imbecile.]

You know, it might be a bad idea to insult one of the few people who actually seems to know what he's doing around here. Just saying.

[Not to mention if Tony was included in the 'ladies' comment. After all, he was the one in charge of Ralph's protection, and probably the one who would have to vouch for him if he got killed. When Ralph spat, Tony merely rolled his eyes. He'd met people far more disgusting than that. Fortunately, West was quick to focus on the task at hand, figuring out that the hole was corroded. Not having anything else to do, he simply stood around waiting for a response to Morgan's question.]

I'm surprised you even know what that word means. [And with those words, the Master joins them, shining a light down the hole]

Anyway, we've a myriad of options-- most of them wrong. Galvanic corrosion, pitting, microbial, high temperature... Biogenic sulfide corrosion, while positively fascinating, is probably not the source. Pity.

Given the pattern and the smell [which, of course, only he can smell], I'd say a strong acid is the most likely culprit. [He shrugs, then grins] I'd hate to see what it'd do to somebody's face.

[identity profile] surething-boss.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Birdy appears behind him and peers past him to get a look at what everyone else is looking at. More of the same.]

Considering these are all over the place, I'm going to go out on a limb and say somebody upstairs wasn't just clumsy and spilled it, though.

[Morgan visibly jumped when the Master first stepped into view, and is looking at Birdy much with the same 'don't do that' expression. Birdy wiggles her fingers at her.] Boogabooga.

[identity profile] fathersbludgeon.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ralph glances between the new arrivals, having taken a swift step away from the hole. Past throwing Birdy a "well done for stating the obvious" glare, he couldn't really come up with anything intelligent to add.

...This appears to dampen his mood]

[The Master claps his hands gleefully] A point for the lady! [He then looks at West, and shrugs] And a point for that lady, too, for making the brilliant deduction about corrosion.

[To which the Major responded with slapping the back of the Time Lord's head. Painfully. The Master lets out a little snarl] Remember, Major, you can get left behind for such inappropriate behavior.

Morgan: [in warning] Major.

Birdy: [oblivious, rests an arm on the Master's shoulder in a casual, chatty manner] So that leaves what as the cause? Something manmade or something more -- [she glances up, then down] organic in origin? [It's not like she hasn't run into one or two mutants who bled or pissed acid in her time.]

[identity profile] fathersbludgeon.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ralph leans in as Birdy finishes speaking and glances down the barrel of his gun]

Yeah, think you two could hold off with the "sexual tension" thing for, what, a coupla minutes? [He pulls a face] There's a hole.

[And then he pauses, looking up. He appears skeptical if not a little mocking] Organic?

[identity profile] tadwizard.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[After the...whichever one that was, listed off all the things the hole wasn't, he finally said what it was. Tony wondered the point of listing all those things if he could already tell by the smell what it was. Maybe showing off that he knew what could possibly make a hole, even if it wasn't a hole like that one? At the mention of a smell, however, Tony leaned over it and sniffed. He didn't smell anything, but maybe this guy wasn't quite human. Or just had a better sense of smell. Then the guy called West a lady as well. Seriously, what was with everyone on the barge calling West a girl?]

The people around here really aren't original with their insults, are they?

[He listened as they spoke about what could have caused it, though Tony didn't have much to add so stayed silent. At least, until Ralph looked down the barrel of his gun.]

You're supposed to point that end of the gun the other way. And not at any of us.

[...and then Ralph, after a comment about sexual tension, mentioned that there was a hole.]

Yeah, we figured that much out already.

[And then proceeded to doubt the claim that it could be organic.]

There could be an alien that spits acid.

[There could be anything in this place, after all.]
