I would have been bumped off in the previous room, so you would have had to go it alone--well, you and the Master, anyway, and I can't imagine him trying to help you with it.

It's not so

I know it's an odd thing to say, and a little less than comfortable for you consider he one of them tortured you, but that one hasn't gone out of his way to start shit yet, so I don't have so much of a problem with him. He's a bit of a grump and a lot less subtle about it, but then I also don't expect to catch him tying people's shoelaces together on a daily basis, either. I mean if he's gonna start anything I don't think the Admiral will let him stay around long, y'know?

You could have gotten away with it, too. Veruca's parents might have put up a bit of a fuss, but in the end she always got exactly what she wanted.

The book is from a more reserved time. I imagine children who swore then would have been spanked for it, or at least had their mouth washed out with soap.

I'm with you on that first part, although I can't say I agree with corporal punishment for children in any situation. We're also from two different times, so...

A swat on the butt when it comes to a small child doesn't do any real harm; it just reminds them. You can't punish children the same for every bad thing they do; there's degrees.
